OPERATION DAFFODIL
March 6, 2019
Whatever on earth were those people from Carolina Bay doing out on that 43 degree rainy bitter Saturday morning? Were they cleaning up the little stream running alongside the buildings? Were they putting down mulch where it had washed away during Florence? Some looked a little older (92), some looked a little stiff, some couldn’t bend over. Afterall, this is a Retirement Community, it says on the sign. Well, we all learned that our energetic neighbors Beth and Ron Price brought forth the idea of endless ribbons of daffodils in the spring, where there is now only brown pine straw and old leaves. Those of us who joined in learned the next day just how many bulbs Beth ordered….we learned this through our very stiff joints and aching muscles. We had technique, we knew that! Shovel in, drop bulb, cover up, or bulb digger push down, pull up, insert bulb. What of course we came to learn was how many she ordered, some of them we didn’t even get planted, hoping for another warmer dry day to come to finish OPERATION DAFFODIL. We know we will see them in the spring!!!! Maybe even sometime this winter during one of our February very warm spells. But there are hundreds and they will bring new brightness in their cheery yellow faces to chase away winter. (Did you know daffodils are the Welsh national flower? That’s what Dewi told me.)
